PRO TIP: From anywhere on the site, you can click the drop-down choices on The Archives tab to select the specific archive you wish to visit, or select from the list below.

  • Help Put Names to Faces

If you recognize faces and can provide names that are not included in the captions below the photos, please let us know so we can add that information.

Make note of the full photo number (ex: TA-A01-231) so we can quickly call up the photo and add the name and any other identifying information to its meta-data. And with any luck, facial recognition software will find other occurrences throughout your family’s database.

Click the Corrections tab at the top right of the page for an email link.

I know one of those mystery people!

  • Downloading Full-Sized Versions

The images in your family’s photo gallery are sized for optimal viewing on your screen -- whether a desktop computer, an iPad or an iPhone.

Should you wish to download a full sized copy of a photo, please make note of the photo number (eg: TA-A08-102) and then follow the steps below:

    1. Open a new browser and type in the following address:
      http://family-archives.com/The_Archives/yourarchivename/Select_an_A lbum/albumXX/images/large/
      yourarchivename = turnbull-atkinson for example
XX is the Album Number (ex: 08)
    2. Now you can right-click on the name of the photo you want, and download it to your computer.
    3. You can also click any photo to view it, then right-click and save to your computer that way.

Please note we are working on a simpler way of downloading the full size images, along with their embedded meta-data (names, captions, etc). Members of the mailing list will be notified when this option is available.

  • Navigating the Documents Section

    TreeNavigation

You will notice the term [To Parent Directory] at the top left of your screen. Click here to move BACKWARD one level in the folder tree.

The term <dir> indicates a directory or folder. Click the name of the folder to look inside.

A filename ending in .pdf indicates a scanned document. Click the filename  to read the document on your screen (or you can download it for later viewing as indicated in the column, “Viewing PDF files”, on the right).

And remember, you can back out of the folder you are viewing by clicking [To Parent Directory] at any time.

  • Viewing PDF files

(Applicable to the documents sections only)

Most modern browsers offer built-in PDF (Portable Document Format, by Adobe) viewing functionality. Simply clicking on the filename should bring up the scanned document in your browser, and allow you to view it just as it was scanned. Firefox and Chrome should offer this capability inherently.

Your browser may also be configured to offer you a choice of saving the file to your hard drive or viewing it immediately.

If you wish to save the file for later viewing, right-click on the filename while you are browsing the documents, and choose “save link as”.

    SaveLinkAs

If you don’t have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can download it here. It will be necessary to view these scanned documents. It is also a valuable tool to have on your computer and Adobe is a reliable name in software, so you can install it with confidence.

There are other PDF viewers available, and your computer may already have one installed. If so, these work perfectly well for viewing the scanned files as well.

  • Crediting Photos

If you upload photos from the collection to genealogy websites or use them elsewhere, please remember to credit the archive from whence it comes.

This helps us track the photos in case someone else attaches them to one of their relatives, and can help you determine if a photo you see elsewhere is one you already have in the family archive.

Please credit as follows, remembering to include the full photograph ID number and the name of your own family archive.

      Bill Smith SR-04-1234
